How to Train

Training your Pokémon in Champions uses Victory Points (VP) to customize their stats, moves, nature, and ability.

Training Steps

  1. Go to the training menu
  2. Select "Pokémon Training"
  3. Choose the Pokémon to train
  4. Train the Pokémon and confirm changes

Training Costs

  • Stats (Effort Values) - 5 VP per stat point
  • Moves - 250 VP per move
  • Nature - 500 VP
  • Ability - 500 VP

Note: Training tickets can be used to reduce the cost of training.

Stats (Effort Values)

In Pokémon Champions, stats are determined entirely by Effort Values (EVs). Unlike other Pokémon games, there are no Individual Values (IVs) in Champions - only EVs.

EV Allocation

  • Total Points: 66 points can be allocated across all stats
  • Per Stat Maximum: 32 points can be allocated to any single stat
  • Cost: 5 VP per stat point

Understanding Stats

  • HP - How much damage the Pokémon can take before fainting
  • Attack (Atk) - Used to calculate attacks that are physical (represented by a jagged power symbol)
  • Special Attack (SpA) - Used to calculate attacks that are special (represented by a circle symbol)
  • Defense (Def) - Used to reduce damage taken from physical attacks
  • Special Defense (SpD) - Used to reduce damage taken from special attacks
  • Speed (Spe) - Used to determine which Pokémon acts first in a round

Moves

Moves can be changed for 250 VP each. When selecting moves, consider the following properties:

Move Properties

  • Category - Physical, Special, or Status
  • Power - How much damage the move does (included when calculating your Pokémon's attack and the opponent's defense)
  • Accuracy - How often the attack connects with the opponent (100 is best)
  • Range - How many and which Pokémon the move affects

Physical vs Special Moves

Attacking moves come in two types: Physical and Special. Physical moves use the user's Attack stat and the target's Defense stat to calculate damage. Special moves use the user's Special Attack stat and the target's Special Defense stat to calculate damage. Physical attacks are represented by a star-shaped icon, while Special attacks are represented by a circle icon.

Status Moves

Status moves don't deal direct damage but provide various effects such as raising stats, lowering opponent stats, inflicting status conditions, setting up weather or terrain, or providing support to your team. For more information, check out the Status Conditions Guide and the Weather & Terrain Guide.

Natures (Stat Alignments)

Natures (called stat alignments in Champions) affect a Pokémon's stats. Each nature increases one stat by 10% and decreases another stat by 10%. For competitive battling, you generally want to choose a nature that boosts a Pokémon's main attacking stat while lowering a stat that is less important for that Pokémon.

Cost: 500 VP to change nature

Best Natures for Competitive Play

The following natures are commonly used in competitive battling (when not using Trick Room):

  • Adamant/Modest - Raises Attack/Special Attack, lowers the other (ideal for attackers)
  • Jolly/Timid - Raises Speed, lowers Attack/Special Attack (for fast attackers)
  • Bold/Impish - Raises Defense, lowers Attack/Special Attack (for physical walls)
  • Calm/Careful - Raises Special Defense, lowers Attack/Special Attack (for special walls)

Abilities

Abilities provide unique passive effects during battle that can significantly impact your strategy. You can change your Pokémon's ability for 500 VP.

Cost: 500 VP to change ability

Levels

There are no traditional levels in Pokémon Champions. Every Pokémon's stats are calculated as if they were level 50, creating a balanced competitive environment focused on strategy rather than grinding.
